Reflecting on My Journey as a Judge for Xero’s Beautiful Business Fund 2024

This year, I was honored to be invited as one of the judges for the Xero Beautiful Business Fund 2024 — an initiative providing over SG$600,000 in funding to support small businesses and non-profit organizations in realizing their growth plans and driving future success. Being part of the judging panel, I had the privilege to learn about some of Singapore’s most purpose-driven businesses. It was an incredible experience.

In order to judge the entries objectively, I was required to evaluate diverse local businesses across different categories, such as “Innovating for Sustainability,” “Strengthening Community Connection,” “Trailblazing with Technology” and “Upskilling for the future”. Each company’s submission was unique, with its own inspiring visions on how they intended to use the funding to create a positive impact. I had to examine the entries from all angles — how well each project met its objectives, the dedication of the founders towards their mission, and if their plans were actionable and well-structured.

One company that truly made an impression on me was Seven Clean Seas. It competed in the category for “Innovating for Sustainability”. What stood out to me was their focused and actionable plans to achieve environmental sustainability with the funding earned. They displayed a high level of commitment and passion which fully convinced me that they are genuinely on a mission to drive change and to reduce environmental damage. They had also effectively demonstrated new and inventive ways to solve problems related to environmental sustainability. In addition, they presented a comprehensive roadmap for their project, portraying how their purpose and goals could make a real difference for our oceans.

The whole experience of being a judge for this event truly allowed me to witness first-hand how powerful small businesses in Singapore are striving to make the world a better place. It has further reaffirmed the power of purpose-driven businesses for me, and I am grateful for this opportunity to support and recognise these wonderful Singaporean organisations.
